                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to a licensed peace officer who is a visiting resource
 1-3     officer in a public school.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1. Chapter 1701, Occupations Code, is amended by
 1-6     adding Subchapter M to read as follows:
 1-7                SUBCHAPTER M.  VISITING RESOURCE OFFICER IN A
 1-8                                PUBLIC SCHOOL
 1-9           Sec. 1701.601.  LICENSE REQUIRED. A peace officer who is a
1-10     visiting resource officer in a public school must be licensed as
1-11     provided by this chapter.
1-12           Sec. 1701.602.  FIREARMS ACCIDENT PREVENTION PROGRAM. (a)  A
1-13     peace officer who is a visiting resource officer in a public
1-14     elementary school shall provide instruction to students in a
1-15     firearms accident prevention program, as determined by the school
1-16     district.
1-17           (b)  A firearms accident prevention program must include the
1-18     safety message, "Stop! Don't Touch. Leave the Area. Tell an
1-19     Adult.", and may include instructional materials from the National
1-20     Rifle Association Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program, including animated
1-21     videos and activity books.
1-22           SECTION 2.  Sections 1701.601 and 1701.602, Occupations Code,
1-23     as added by this Act, apply beginning with the 2001-2002 school
1-24     year.
 2-1           SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
 2-2     a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
 2-3     provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
 2-4     Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
 2-5     Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
