1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to the amount of compensation and allowances for county
 1-3     auditors.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1.  Section 152.032, Local Government Code, is
 1-6     amended to read as follows:
 1-7           Sec. 152.032.  LIMITATIONS ON COUNTY AUDITOR'S COMPENSATION
 1-8     AND ALLOWANCES.  (a)  Except as provided by Subsection (b), the
 1-9     [The] amount of the compensation and allowances of a county auditor
1-10     may not exceed the amount of the compensation and allowances
1-11     received from all sources by the highest paid elected county
1-12     officer, other than a judge of a statutory county court, whose
1-13     salary and allowances are set by the commissioners court.
1-14           (b)  This subsection applies only to a county that employs an
1-15     arena venue project manager hired as of March 7, 2001, and that has
1-16     a population of less than 1.4 million in which a municipality with
1-17     a population of more than one million is located.  The amount of
1-18     the compensation and allowances of a county auditor in a county
1-19     subject to this subsection may not exceed the amount of the
1-20     compensation and allowances received from all sources by the county
1-21     budget officer.  If the county hires a county budget officer at a
1-22     salary lower than the salary of the previous county budget officer,
1-23     the county auditor's salary may not be reduced on that basis.
1-24           (c)  A county auditor who was in office on August 31, 1987,
 2-1     is entitled to be paid an annual salary not less than the annual
 2-2     salary the auditor was being paid on that date.
 2-3           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
