                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to the punishment for assault committed against certain
 1-3     sports officials.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1. Section 22.01(e), Penal Code, is amended by adding
 1-6     Subdivisions (3) and (4) to read as follows:
 1-7                 (3)  "Public servant" means a person described by
 1-8     Section 1.07 or a sports official.
 1-9                 (4)  "Sports official" means a person who serves as a
1-10     referee, umpire, or linesman, or in another similar official
1-11     capacity with respect to an interscholastic, intercollegiate, or
1-12     other organized amateur or professional athletic competition.
1-13           SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2001, and
1-14     applies only to an offense committed on or after that date.  An
1-15     offense committed before the effective date of this Act is covered
1-16     by the law in effect when the offense was committed, and the former
1-17     law is continued in effect for that purpose.  For purposes of this
1-18     section, an offense was committed before the effective date of this
1-19     Act if any element of the offense occurred before that date.
