1-1 AN ACT 1-2 relating to requiring the secretary of state to establish a 1-3 toll-free telephone number for reporting abuses of voting rights. 1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-5 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 31, Election Code, is 1-6 amended by adding Section 31.0055 to read as follows: 1-7 Sec. 31.0055. VOTING RIGHTS HOTLINE. (a) The secretary of 1-8 state shall establish a toll-free telephone number to allow a 1-9 person to report an existing or potential abuse of voting rights. 1-10 (b) A notice informing voters of the telephone number and 1-11 the purpose for the number shall be continuously posted in a 1-12 prominent location at each polling place during the early voting 1-13 period and on election day for each election held on a uniform 1-14 election date. The secretary of state shall prescribe the form for 1-15 the notice under this subsection. 1-16 SECTION 2. (a) This Act takes effect September 1, 2001. 1-17 (b) The secretary of state shall establish a toll-free 1-18 telephone number and prescribe the form for the notice informing 1-19 voters about the number as required by Section 31.0055, Election 1-20 Code, as added by this Act, on or before November 1, 2001. _______________________________ _______________________________ President of the Senate Speaker of the House I certify that H.B.
