                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to the compensation of county sheriffs.
 1-3           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-4           SECTION 1. SUBCHAPTER A, CHAPTER 85, LOCAL GOVERNMENT CODE is
 1-5     amended by adding Section 85.0026 to read as follows:  SECTION
 1-6     85.0026.  COMPENSATION OF COUNTY SHERIFFS. (a)  In a county of
 1-7     population of 20,000 or less, a county sheriff may receive from the
 1-8     state supplemental salary compensation to be paid to the county
 1-9     sheriff in an amount provided in the General Appropriations Act.
1-10           (b)  If any amount of the compensation is waived by the
1-11     sheriff the waived amount shall be used for expenses of the county
1-12     sheriff's office.
1-13           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
1-14     a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
1-15     provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
1-16     Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
1-17     Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
