1-1 AN ACT
1-2 relating to special license plates for certain government
1-3 officials.
1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-5 SECTION 1. Section 502.295(e), Transportation Code, is
1-6 amended to read as follows:
1-7 (e) A registration under this section is for a registration
1-8 period of 12 consecutive months or until January [March] 31,
1-9 whichever period is shorter.
1-10 SECTION 2. Section 502.295(g), Transportation Code, is
1-11 amended to read as follows:
1-12 (g) In this section, "state official" means:
1-13 (1) a member of the legislature;
1-14 (2) the governor;
1-15 (3) the lieutenant governor;
1-16 (4) [a justice of the supreme court;]
1-17 [(5) a judge of the court of criminal appeals;]
1-18 [(6)] the attorney general;
1-19 (5) [(7)] the Commissioner of the General Land Office;
1-20 (6) [(8)] the comptroller;
1-21 (7) [(9)] a member of the Railroad Commission of
1-22 Texas;
1-23 (8) [(10)] the commissioner of agriculture;
1-24 (9) [(11)] the secretary of state; or
2-1 (10) [(12)] a member of the State Board of Education.
2-2 SECTION 3. Section 502.296(e), Transportation Code, is
2-3 amended to read as follows:
2-4 (e) A registration under this section is for a registration
2-5 period of 12 consecutive months or until January [March] 31,
2-6 whichever period is shorter.
2-7 SECTION 4. Section 502.297(e), Transportation Code, is
2-8 amended to read as follows:
2-9 (e) A registration under this section is for a registration
2-10 period of 12 consecutive months or until January [March] 31,
2-11 whichever period is shorter.
2-12 SECTION 5. Section 502.297(g), Transportation Code, is
2-13 amended to read as follows:
2-14 (g) In this section:
2-15 (1) "Federal judge" means:
2-16 (A) a judge of the Fifth Circuit Court of
2-17 Appeals;
2-18 (B) a judge [or a magistrate] of a United States
2-19 district court; or
2-20 (C) a judge of a United States bankruptcy court.
2-21 (2) "State judge" means:
2-22 (A) a justice of the supreme court;
2-23 (B) a judge of the court of criminal appeals;
2-24 (C) a judge of a court of appeals;
2-25 (D) [(B)] a district court judge; or
2-26 (E) [(C)] a presiding judge of an administrative
2-27 judicial district[; or]
3-1 [(D) a statutory county court judge].
3-2 SECTION 6. (a) Except as provided by Subsection (b), this
3-3 Act takes effect September 1, 2001, and applies only to a
3-4 registration period beginning on or after that date.
3-5 (b) Sections 1, 3, and 4 of this Act take effect April 1,
3-6 2002. If license plates are issued for a period of less than 12
3-7 months because of the changes in law made by those sections, the
3-8 Texas Department of Transportation shall reduce the registration
3-9 fee for that period accordingly.
