1-6 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
1-7 AN ACT
1-8 relating to special license plates for certain government
1-9 officials.
1-10 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-11 SECTION 1. Section 502.295(e), Transportation Code, is
1-12 amended to read as follows:
1-13 (e) A registration under this section is for a registration
1-14 period of 12 consecutive months or until January [March] 31,
1-15 whichever period is shorter.
1-16 SECTION 2. Section 502.295(g), Transportation Code, is
1-17 amended to read as follows:
1-18 (g) In this section, "state official" means:
1-19 (1) a member of the legislature;
1-20 (2) the governor;
1-21 (3) the lieutenant governor;
1-22 (4) [a justice of the supreme court;]
1-23 [(5) a judge of the court of criminal appeals;]
1-24 [(6)] the attorney general;
1-25 (5) [(7)] the Commissioner of the General Land Office;
1-26 (6) [(8)] the comptroller;
1-27 (7) [(9)] a member of the Railroad Commission of
1-28 Texas;
1-29 (8) [(10)] the commissioner of agriculture;
1-30 (9) [(11)] the secretary of state; or
1-31 (10) [(12)] a member of the State Board of Education.
1-32 SECTION 3. Section 502.296(e), Transportation Code, is
1-33 amended to read as follows:
1-34 (e) A registration under this section is for a registration
1-35 period of 12 consecutive months or until January [March] 31,
1-36 whichever period is shorter.
1-37 SECTION 4. Section 502.297(e), Transportation Code, is
1-38 amended to read as follows:
1-39 (e) A registration under this section is for a registration
1-40 period of 12 consecutive months or until January [March] 31,
1-41 whichever period is shorter.
1-42 SECTION 5. Section 502.297(g)(2), Transportation Code, is
1-43 amended to read as follows:
1-44 (2) "State judge" means:
1-45 (A) a justice of the supreme court;
1-46 (B) a judge of the court of criminal appeals;
1-47 (C) a judge of a court of appeals;
1-48 (D) [(B)] a district court judge;
1-49 (E) [(C)] a presiding judge of an administrative
1-50 judicial district; or
1-51 (F) [(D)] a statutory county court judge.
1-52 SECTION 6. (a) Except as provided by Subsection (b), this
1-53 Act takes effect September 1, 2001, and applies only to a
1-54 registration period beginning on or after that date.
1-55 (b) Sections 1, 3, and 4 of this Act take effect April 1,
1-56 2002. If license plates are issued for a period of less than 12
1-57 months because of the changes in law made by those sections, the
1-58 Texas Department of Transportation shall reduce the registration
1-59 fee for that period accordingly.
