                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to petitions to increase salaries of members of the
 1-3     sheriff's department.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1.  Section 152.072(b), Local Government Code, is
 1-6     amended to read as follows:
 1-7           (b)  A petition under this section must:
 1-8                 (1)  state the amount of the proposed minimum salary
 1-9     for each rank, pay grade, or classification, not to exceed a 10%
1-10     increase in the current salary;
1-11                 (2)  state the effective date of the proposed salary
1-12     increase, not earlier than the first day of the next county fiscal
1-13     year;
1-14                 (3)  designate five qualified voters to act as a
1-15     committee of petitioners authorized to negotiate with the
1-16     commissioners court under Subsection (g); and
1-17                 (4)  be signed by a number of qualified voters equal to
1-18     at least 25 percent of the number of voters who voted in the most
1-19     recent countywide election for county officers.
1-20           SECTION 2.  This Act will take effect immediately if it
1-21     receives a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each
1-22     house, as provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.
1-23     If this Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate
1-24     effect, this Act takes effect on September 1, 2001.
