 1-6                         HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-7           WHEREAS, Tejanos past and present have enriched the cultural
 1-8     heritage of the State of Texas and contribute significantly to its
 1-9     strength; and
1-10           WHEREAS, The Capitol grounds display statues, memorials, and
1-11     commemorations of people, ideals, and events that compose Texan
1-12     identity; these displays document the struggles and the successes
1-13     that Texans have experienced in the past and serve to inspire us as
1-14     we face the challenges of today; and
1-15           WHEREAS, A privately funded and designed statue, monument, or
1-16     exhibit on the Texas Capitol grounds paying tribute to Tejanos
1-17     would permanently acknowledge the influences and hopes of the
1-18     prominent and diverse community it portrays; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Chapter 443 of the Government Code authorizes the
1-20     State Preservation Board to preserve, maintain, and restore the
1-21     Capitol grounds, which include the Capitol, the General Land Office
1-22     Building, their contents, their grounds, and monuments and exhibits
1-23     on the grounds; now, therefore, be it
1-24           RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
1-25     hereby approve the construction of a statue or monument on the
1-26     Capitol grounds that pays tribute to the contributions of Tejanos
1-27     to the State of Texas, subject to the rules of the State
1-28     Preservation Board; and, be it further
1-29           RESOLVED, That the Tejano Statue-Capitol, Inc., assist the
1-30     State Preservation Board in the planning and completion of the
1-31     statue or monument; and, be it further
1-32           RESOLVED, That the statue or monument be wholly funded by
1-33     private donations and that the donors' names not be inscribed on
1-34     the statue or monument; and, be it further
1-35           RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official
1-36     copy of this resolution to the executive director of the State
1-37     Preservation Board.
