No. 49 77R91 GMW-D HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Midland Lee High School Rebels football team 1-2 capped off a remarkable 1999 season by defeating the Aldine 1-3 Eisenhower High School Eagles 42-21 to claim the 1999 UIL Class 5A 1-4 Division I state championship and earn its second straight state 1-5 title; and 1-6 WHEREAS, After winning the Class 5A Division II state crown 1-7 in 1998, Midland Lee began the 1999 season with a number one 1-8 ranking in Texas and nationally in USA Today; Head Coach John 1-9 Parchman and his vaunted Rebels lived up to the lofty preseason 1-10 expectations by compiling an undefeated 15-0 record en route to 1-11 their state title and wire-to-wire run as the nation's top-rated 1-12 team; and 1-13 WHEREAS, In the title game the Rebels' high-powered offense 1-14 was led by senior quarterback Jon Rogers and junior running back 1-15 Cedric Benson, who ran for 198 yards and equaled his 1998 title 1-16 game mark of five touchdowns, running his season total to an 1-17 astounding 51; by the third quarter the Rebels held a 28-0 lead, 1-18 largely due to a stingy defense that stymied the Eagles on several 1-19 key occasions, and after withstanding a brief Aldine rally, marched 1-20 on to a decisive victory; and 1-21 WHEREAS, This stellar season required each of the team's 1-22 talented athletes to perform to the best of their abilities; the 1-23 state triumph is the culmination of many hours of hard work and 1-24 training and is a richly deserved honor that all of the Rebels' 2-1 players, coaches, and supporters will undoubtedly take pride in for 2-2 many years to come; now, therefore, be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-4 hereby honor the Midland Lee High School Rebels for winning the 2-5 1999 UIL Class 5A Division I state football championship and extend 2-6 to them sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; 2-7 and, be it further 2-8 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-9 prepared for Head Coach John Parchman and the Midland Lee High 2-10 School Rebels as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of 2-11 Representatives and Senate.
