                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The Midland Lee High School Rebels football team
1-2 capped off a remarkable 1999 season by defeating the Aldine
1-3 Eisenhower High School Eagles 42-21 to claim the 1999 UIL Class 5A
1-4 Division I state championship and earn its second straight state
 1-5 title; and
1-6 WHEREAS, After winning the Class 5A Division II state crown
1-7 in 1998, Midland Lee began the 1999 season with a number one
1-8 ranking in Texas and nationally in USA Today; Head Coach John
1-9 Parchman and his vaunted Rebels lived up to the lofty preseason
1-10 expectations by compiling an undefeated 15-0 record en route to
1-11 their state title and wire-to-wire run as the nation's top-rated
1-12 team; and
1-13 WHEREAS, In the title game the Rebels' high-powered offense
1-14 was led by senior quarterback Jon Rogers and junior running back
1-15 Cedric Benson, who ran for 198 yards and equaled his 1998 title
1-16 game mark of five touchdowns, running his season total to an
1-17 astounding 51; by the third quarter the Rebels held a 28-0 lead,
1-18 largely due to a stingy defense that stymied the Eagles on several
1-19 key occasions, and after withstanding a brief Aldine rally, marched
1-20 on to a decisive victory; and
1-21 WHEREAS, This stellar season required each of the team's
1-22 talented athletes to perform to the best of their abilities; the
1-23 state triumph is the culmination of many hours of hard work and
1-24 training and is a richly deserved honor that all of the Rebels'
2-1 players, coaches, and supporters will undoubtedly take pride in for
2-2 many years to come; now, therefore, be it
2-3 RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
