HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost a distinguished native son 1-2 with the passing of the Honorable Jerry Kenneth Johnson on April 1-3 19, 2000, at the age of 66; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A fifth-generation resident of Nacogdoches County, 1-5 he was born October 11, 1933, and graduated from Nacogdoches High 1-6 School and Texas A&M University; Mr. Johnson served his nation with 1-7 distinction as an officer of the U.S. Army in the years following 1-8 the Korean War; and 1-9 WHEREAS, He was elected to the Texas House of Representatives 1-10 in 1988, and during his eight productive years with that body, 1-11 Representative Johnson made many significant contributions through 1-12 his diligent work on the Agriculture and Livestock, Human Services, 1-13 Public Education, and Appropriations committees, as well as through 1-14 his role as vice chairman of the Labor and Employment Relations and 1-15 Pensions and Investments committees; and 1-16 WHEREAS, In addition to Mr. Johnson's legislative service, 1-17 this civic-minded individual devoted his time and energy to a 1-18 number of worthy organizations, including the Nacogdoches County 1-19 Chamber of Commerce, the Nacogdoches Shrine Club, Nacogdoches 1-20 Booster Club, Milam Masonic Lodge No. 2, and the Nacogdoches Rotary 1-21 Club, and ably performed the duties of president for the Texas 1-22 Rural Water Association and the Deep East Texas Development 1-23 Association; and 1-24 WHEREAS, His diverse talents and dedication enabled him to 2-1 achieve success as a faculty member and administrator at Stephen F. 2-2 Austin State University, as a bank vice president, and as a local 2-3 businessman; and 2-4 WHEREAS, A man of abiding faith, Mr. Johnson was an active 2-5 worshiper at Fredonia Hill Baptist Church, where he was also a 2-6 deacon and Sunday school teacher; and 2-7 WHEREAS, In all aspects of his life, Representative Johnson 2-8 demonstrated unfailing wisdom, graciousness, and commitment to the 2-9 betterment of his fellow citizens; although his presence will be 2-10 deeply missed by all who were privileged to know him, the spirit of 2-11 this dedicated Texan will surely live on in his remarkable legacy 2-12 of achievement; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-14 hereby pay tribute to the life of Jerry Johnson and extend sincere 2-15 sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Joan Stripling 2-16 Johnson; to his parents, Jack and Merle Johnson; to his son and 2-17 daughter-in-law, Ken and Melissa Johnson; to his daughter and 2-18 son-in-law, Carla and James Redfield; to his brother, Felix 2-19 Johnson; to his grandchildren, Andrew Johnson and Benjamin Johnson 2-20 and Cawren Redfield and James Redfield III; and to the many other 2-21 friends, relatives, and colleagues of this beloved gentleman; and, 2-22 be it further 2-23 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-24 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-25 House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in 2-26 memory of the Honorable Jerry Kenneth Johnson.
