No. 81 77R2165 MMS-D HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, Musicians are treasured artists who enliven and 1-2 enchant audiences irrespective of language or national background, 1-3 and who express in myriad ways the cultural heritage of their 1-4 communities and the spirit of their times; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Traditionally, a committee of the Texas Legislature 1-6 has elected Texas State Artists, appropriately honoring those 1-7 Texans who have exhibited exceptional ability in their field, and 1-8 it is equally fitting that Texas musicians, who contribute so 1-9 magnificently to the vibrant cultural life of their state, be 1-10 honored in this fashion; now, therefore, be it 1-11 RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas 1-12 hereby request the speaker of the house of representatives and the 1-13 lieutenant governor to create a special committee to designate two 1-14 Texas State Musicians, to serve successive one-year terms; and, be 1-15 it further 1-16 RESOLVED, That the committee shall choose a Texas State 1-17 Musician for the year beginning November 1, 2001, and ending 1-18 October 31, 2002, and a second Texas State Musician for the year 1-19 beginning November 1, 2002, and ending October 31, 2003; and, be it 1-20 further 1-21 RESOLVED, That the special committee be named the Texas State 1-22 Musician Committee and be composed of three members of the senate, 1-23 to be appointed by the lieutenant governor, and three members of 1-24 the house of representatives, to be appointed by the speaker of the 2-1 house; the lieutenant governor and speaker of the house shall each 2-2 designate a cochair from among their appointees, and the committee 2-3 shall subsequently meet at the call of the cochairs; and, be it 2-4 further 2-5 RESOLVED, That in the selection process each committee member 2-6 may nominate no more than one musician for each year, and from the 2-7 list of nominees the committee members shall elect a state 2-8 musician; in the election, a member may not vote for his or her 2-9 nominee; and, be it further 2-10 RESOLVED, That the persons designated as state musicians be 2-11 superior and recognized musicians who are citizens of the State of 2-12 Texas.
