No. 116 77R5487 JXC-D HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Honorable Al Price, former member of the Texas 1-2 House of Representatives, has contributed significantly to the 1-3 health and well-being of Texas communities; in addition to devoting 1-4 22 years of active service to the State of Texas from 1977 to 1998, 1-5 Mr. Price has distinguished himself as an outstanding leader in his 1-6 own community of Beaumont; and 1-7 WHEREAS, As the first African American representative from 1-8 Southeast Texas, Mr. Price dedicated himself most notably to the 1-9 issues of the poor and disadvantaged, particularly those of 1-10 minority communities; through membership on the House Committee on 1-11 Higher Education and the House Committee on Public Education during 1-12 his tenure, he was able to emphasize his deep concern for African 1-13 American education and advancement; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Mr. Price's commitment to education and empowerment 1-15 in his community is further reflected through his establishment of 1-16 the program "Save Our Sons" to examine problems in the areas of 1-17 education, employment, health, and criminal justice that confront 1-18 minorities; he has also contributed time and energy as head of the 1-19 Southeast Texas Community Development Corp. Inc., a nonprofit 1-20 organization that builds houses for low-income families; and 1-21 WHEREAS, The Jefferson County State School, a Texas Youth 1-22 Commission facility in Beaumont that houses more than 300 1-23 delinquent male youths, dedicates itself to the same ideals of 1-24 education and community service espoused by Mr. Price; the goal of 2-1 the school is to assist youths in reintegrating into the community 2-2 through a rehabilitation program that includes education and 2-3 participation in a wide range of community service projects; and 2-4 WHEREAS, It is indeed fitting that Mr. Price be recognized 2-5 for his achievements as a distinguished leader in Southeast Texas 2-6 and as a Texas state representative, and that this recognition be 2-7 in association with a facility within his community that is 2-8 similarly devoted to improving the lives of young Texans; now, 2-9 therefore, be it 2-10 RESOLVED, That, contingent on the passage of House Bill 1026, 2-11 the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby direct the 2-12 General Services Commission to rename the Jefferson County State 2-13 School for the Honorable Al Price as a tribute to his commitment to 2-14 public service and his many contributions to the betterment of 2-15 Southeast Texas; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official 2-17 copy of this resolution to the chair and the executive director of 2-18 the General Services Commission.
