HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, Aurelia Juarez of Houston, who passed away on
 1-2     January 13, 2001, at the age of 23, was greatly beloved by her
 1-3     family and a legion of friends for her life of courage, commitment
 1-4     to community, and tremendous resolve; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Born on April 9, 1977, in Chicago and raised in
 1-6     Houston, Ms. Juarez was a young woman of extraordinary promise who
 1-7     had determined on a career in law and in politics; indeed, her
 1-8     numerous hechos, or accomplishments, signified that her dreams of
 1-9     becoming a judge, even of becoming the governor of Texas and a
1-10     United States Supreme Court justice, might be realized; and
1-11           WHEREAS, At the time of her passing, Ms. Juarez was a
1-12     first-year student at the South Texas College of Law and a legal
1-13     assistant with the Dovalina & Eureste law firm, where she had
1-14     worked for six years; she completed her undergraduate education at
1-15     the University of Houston, where she majored in political science
1-16     and minored in Mexican American Studies; and
1-17           WHEREAS, In college Ms. Juarez served as president of the
1-18     Hispanic Student Association and of Delta Zeta Sorority; she was
1-19     elected Most Outstanding Officer of the former group for three
1-20     consecutive years and voted Most Outstanding New Member of the
1-21     latter; she also participated in the Council of Campus Leaders,
1-22     Council of Ethnic Organizations, and other groups; and
1-23           WHEREAS, The numerous scholarships she was awarded amply
1-24     testify to her hard work and academic success; Ms. Juarez was a
 2-1     statewide debating champion with the National Hispanic Institute,
 2-2     the recipient of the Houston Alumnae Association's Outstanding
 2-3     Senior award, and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national
 2-4     leadership honorary society; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, For Aurelia Juarez, community service and community
 2-6     activism were fundamental; she conducted a voter registration drive
 2-7     among seniors at her former high school and gave generously of her
 2-8     time to the Chicano Learning Center, to Navidad en el Barrio, a
 2-9     Christmas project for those in need, and to the Go Tejano
2-10     Scholarship Committee; actively involved in the League of United
2-11     Latin American Citizens, she had already been to three national
2-12     conventions and served as special assistant to the national
2-13     president; and
2-14           WHEREAS, This admirable and accomplished woman was driven to
2-15     achieve, not only because she possessed the personal talents that
2-16     make high achievement possible, but also because she wanted
2-17     passionately to help level the playing field for Latinos in
2-18     education, economic opportunity, and politics; in her honor her
2-19     family and friends are establishing a  most fitting memorial, a
2-20     scholarship for other young Hispanic women seeking to become
2-21     attorneys; thus the remarkable light that blazed in Aurelia Juarez,
2-22     and that will long live on in the hearts of those she knew and
2-23     loved, will also shine for others embarked on a similar, valiant
2-24     journey; now, therefore, be it
2-25           RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-26     hereby pay special tribute to the life of Aurelia Juarez and extend
2-27     sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her parents, Jose
 3-1     R. and Maria Lourdes Juarez; to her brothers and sisters and their
 3-2     spouses, Rodrigo and Graciela Juarez, Jorge and Ester Juarez,
 3-3     Israel Juarez, Manuel and Carmela Juarez, Jose Juarez, Reynaldo
 3-4     Juarez, Leticia and Salvador Rico, Marianela Juarez, Elida Juarez,
 3-5     and Brenda Ante; and to her other relatives and many friends; and,
 3-6     be it further
 3-7           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 3-8     prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas
 3-9     House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in
3-10     memory of Aurelia Juarez.
