HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The citizens of Stephenville lost a valued friend 1-2 and much-admired public servant with the passing of former Mayor 1-3 John Pollan on February 7, 2001, at the age of 72; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A native Texan, this esteemed gentleman was born in 1-5 the city of Rice on November 18, 1928, and graduated from Rice High 1-6 School in 1946; he was a charter student at Navarro Junior College 1-7 in Corsicana before moving on to attend North Texas State 1-8 University in Denton, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1-9 business and marketing; and 1-10 WHEREAS, After six years of service in the Air Force National 1-11 Guard, Mr. Pollan married the former Joyce Henson on April 2, 1955, 1-12 and together they shared a joyous union that was blessed with two 1-13 daughters and three grandchildren; and 1-14 WHEREAS, For 21 years, he was a valued employee of the Ford 1-15 Motor Company, holding numerous management positions and 1-16 successfully initiating its first Ford Car Auction in Dallas; his 1-17 extensive travels while with the company led him to Stephenville, 1-18 and he was so enamored with the town that he moved his family there 1-19 in 1978 and purchased a Ford dealership, which he operated until 1-20 1989; for the next decade he excelled as an entrepreneur and was 1-21 president of a successful organization of real estate holding 1-22 companies, J. P. Enterprises; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Mr. Pollan became an invaluable leader to the city 1-24 of Stephenville, serving on its city council from 1982 to 1984 and 2-1 in 1995, as its mayor pro tem in 1983, and as its mayor from 1996 2-2 to 1998; moreover, he was active with a host of noteworthy 2-3 organizations, including the Stephenville Lions Club, the American 2-4 Legion, the American Cancer Society, the Board of Directors of the 2-5 Erath County Appraisal District, the Knights of Pythias, the SALT 2-6 committee, and the Stephenville Planning and Zoning Commission; and 2-7 WHEREAS, This civic-minded gentleman took great pride in 2-8 serving his community, and his significant contributions to 2-9 Stephenville include ensuring the construction of the City Hall, 2-10 the Downtown Plaza, and the Public Safety Building, as well as 2-11 providing for park expansion, and numerous other worthwhile 2-12 projects; a valued parishioner at Stephenville Family Church, 2-13 Mr. Pollan was a man of immense compassion who relished his annual 2-14 role as Santa Claus at the local hospital; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Although John Pollan is gone from us now, his 2-16 presence continues to dwell in the hearts and minds of all those 2-17 who held him dear, and it is indeed appropriate to honor the memory 2-18 of this beloved Texan at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-19 RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-20 hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable John Pollan and 2-21 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, 2-22 Joyce; to his two daughters, Johnna and Valerie; to his three 2-23 grandchildren, Kimberly, Eric, and Casey; and to his other 2-24 relatives and many friends; and, be it further 2-25 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-26 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-27 House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in 3-1 memory of John Pollan.
