                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, Louise H. Ornelas of Tyler is renowned for her
 1-2     outstanding philanthropy in behalf of education and other worthy
 1-3     causes; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Raised in the East Texas community of Arp,
 1-5     Mrs. Ornelas was a co-founder of TCA Cable, parlaying a $10,000
 1-6     investment in a bankrupt cable company into a business worth in
 1-7     excess of $1 billion; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Charitable gifts from this remarkable woman have
 1-9     totaled in the tens of millions of dollars and benefited
1-10     institutions and organizations across East Texas; and
1-11           WHEREAS, At The University of Texas at Tyler, Mrs. Ornelas
1-12     has established an endowed professorship and two endowed
1-13     scholarships and has contributed substantially to major
1-14     construction projects; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Buildings bearing her name have been erected on the
1-16     campuses of Baylor University, East Texas Baptist University, Tyler
1-17     Junior College, and The Brook Hill School in Bullard; her
1-18     generosity has also furthered the work of Texas College, The
1-19     Salvation Army, the Tyler Area Senior Citizens Association,
1-20     Headstart, and the group PATH, People Attempting to Help; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Mrs. Ornelas is the recipient of numerous accolades,
1-22     including an honorary doctorate from East Texas Baptist University
1-23     and awards from Baylor University and The University of Texas at
1-24     Tyler; Texas Monthly has paid tribute to her as one of the state's
 2-1     most important philanthropists; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Guided by honest values, basic goodness, and clear
 2-3     goals, Mrs. Ornelas is using her resources to make a real
 2-4     difference in the lives of countless people, and it is both a
 2-5     privilege and a pleasure to recognize her great contributions to
 2-6     this state; now, therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
 2-8     hereby honor Louise H. Ornelas for her tremendous generosity to
 2-9     higher education and to other charitable causes and express to her
2-10     its deep appreciation for all she has done for the people of Texas;
2-11     and, be it further
2-12           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-13     prepared for Mrs. Ornelas as an expression of high regard by the
2-14     Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
