HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature wishes to honor the memory of
1-2 Charles N. Prothro of Wichita Falls, an outstanding Texan whose
1-3 passing on March 5, 2001, at the age of 83, brought great sorrow to
1-4 his family and friends; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Born on January 14, 1918, this lifelong resident of
1-6 Wichita Falls graduated from Wichita Falls High School and earned a
1-7 business administration degree from The University of Texas at
1-8 Austin; during World War II, he answered his country's call to duty
1-9 and served in the U.S. Coast Guard; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Before the war, Mr. Prothro joined his father-in-law
1-11 in business, establishing the Perkins-Prothro Company; through the
1-12 years his professional interests grew to include oil and gas
1-13 production, ranching, real estate, and investing, in addition to
1-14 his undertaking other ventures such as the Perkins-Timberlake
1-15 Company and the Perkins-Prothro Ranch; and
1-16 WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman was chairman of the board of
1-17 the City National Bank and a director of Texas Utilities Company
1-18 and Southwestern Life Corporation; a longtime congregant of the
1-19 First United Methodist Church, Mr. Prothro was involved in many
1-20 church matters as chairman of the board of trustees and the
1-21 administrative board, and in past years he was an active member of
1-22 the investment committee of the Methodist Children's Home in Waco;
1-23 and
1-24 WHEREAS, Equally generous as he was successful, Mr. Prothro
2-1 devoted much of his time and energy to the betterment of his
2-2 community; he was president of the Perkins-Prothro Foundation, the
2-3 Joe and Lois Perkins Foundation, and the Perkins Lecture Committee,
2-4 as well as the chairman and a member of the board of directors of
2-5 the Baylor University Medical Center Foundation, and he was
2-6 instrumental in the establishment of the Hospice of Wichita Falls;
2-7 and
2-8 WHEREAS, Mr. Prothro's many civic activities included a
2-9 longtime involvement in the YMCA, where he served as board member
2-10 and president and chaired the building committee; he also sat on
2-11 the board of Presbyterian Manor and was president of the advisory
2-12 board of the Woman's Forum; and
2-13 WHEREAS, Keenly interested in the advancement of education,
2-14 Mr. Prothro was a member of the Wichita Falls Independent School
2-15 District board for 16 years, and he was appointed to the Texas
2-16 Commission on Higher Education and the first Coordinating Board of
2-17 the Texas College and University System; he also served on The
2-18 University of Texas development board and as chairman of the
2-19 advisory council of the College of Business Administration
2-20 Foundation; and
2-21 WHEREAS, Truly deserving of recognition, this distinguished
2-22 individual was duly honored as one of five outstanding young men in
2-23 Texas by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, was one of the outstanding
2-24 ex-students of The University of Texas College of Business
2-25 Administration, and received an honorary doctorate of law degree
2-26 from Southwestern University; and
2-27 WHEREAS, Charles N. Prothro was a successful businessman and
3-1 dedicated philanthropist, and the memory of this kind friend,
3-2 devoted husband, and loving father will undoubtedly live on in the
3-3 hearts of all those he so deeply touched; now, therefore, be it
3-4 RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
3-5 hereby pay tribute to the life of Charles N. Prothro and extend
3-6 sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
3-7 Elizabeth; to his son, Joe Prothro and his wife, Dale; to his
3-8 daughter, Kay Yeager and her husband, Frank; to his son, Mark
3-9 Prothro and his wife, Dianne; to the family of his late son,
3-10 Charles Vincent Prothro, and his daughter-in-law, Caren Prothro; to
3-11 his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and to all his other
3-12 relatives and many friends; and, be it further
3-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-14 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
3-15 House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in
3-16 memory of Charles N. Prothro.
