HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, April 3, 2001, is the 50th anniversary of the 1-2 election of the Honorable Tom Vandergriff as the 25-year-old mayor 1-3 of Arlington, and this occasion presents an opportune time to 1-4 reflect on the profound and enduring effect he has had on this 1-5 community; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Currently county judge of Tarrant County, Judge 1-7 Vandergriff has a long and distinguished history of service in 1-8 behalf of Tarrant County residents that started with his election 1-9 as mayor of Arlington and includes a term as a United States 1-10 representative; and 1-11 WHEREAS, During his impressive tenure as Arlington's chief 1-12 elected official, which lasted from 1951 to 1977, Judge Vandergriff 1-13 helped foster the city's dynamic growth into a prime industrial, 1-14 education, medical, and entertainment center of the Southwest; he 1-15 was instrumental in the development of such noteworthy additions to 1-16 the city as Arlington Memorial Hospital, The University of Texas at 1-17 Arlington, and the General Motors plant as well as such leisure 1-18 time favorites as Texas Rangers baseball games at the Ballpark at 1-19 Arlington, Six Flags Over Texas, Hurricane Harbor, and Lake 1-20 Arlington; and 1-21 WHEREAS, The city of Arlington has grown from a town of fewer 1-22 than 8,000 residents in 1951 to a thriving city of more than 1-23 300,000 today, and Tom Vandergriff has made immeasurable 1-24 contributions to its prosperity; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Intelligent, dynamic, and committed, Judge Tom 2-2 Vandergriff is a leader in the Tarrant County community and a 2-3 public servant most worthy of emulation; now, therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-5 hereby commend Judge Tom Vandergriff for his decisive leadership 2-6 and deep commitment to the people of Texas and extend to him 2-7 warmest wishes for continued success; and, be it further 2-8 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-9 prepared for Judge Vandergriff as an expression of high regard by 2-10 the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
