HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is proud to join the citizens 1-2 of Marshall in the joyous celebration of Marshall Days at the State 1-3 Capitol on March 27-28, 2001; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Located in East Texas, Marshall was settled in 1839 1-5 and named in honor of Chief Justice John Marshall; the town, which 1-6 is the county seat of Harrison County, was incorporated by the 1-7 Texas Legislature in 1844; and 1-8 WHEREAS, This charming city has the distinction of being the 1-9 first town in Texas to have a telegraph, and by 1860 it was one of 1-10 the biggest and most prosperous cities in Texas; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The proximity of railroads enabled Marshall to 1-12 become a major East Texas hub for cotton-marketing; this, coupled 1-13 with the influx of students to Marshall University, Marshall 1-14 Masonic Female Institute, Wiley College, and Bishop College, 1-15 brought about significant growth well into the late 1800s; and 1-16 WHEREAS, After the decline of cotton production around 1930, 1-17 Marshall became a retail center, largely due to its strategic 1-18 location between Dallas and Shreveport, and featured wood and 1-19 metalworking industries; the emphasis on higher education has 1-20 always remained, and the city is home to East Texas Baptist 1-21 University, which was founded in 1914 as East Texas Baptist 1-22 College; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Marshall is most certainly a forward-looking 1-24 community, but its citizens also take great pride in preserving the 2-1 city's historic past, as is evidenced by the numerous homes the 2-2 town has listed in the National Register for Historic Places, and 2-3 countless historical landmarks that have been awarded to the city 2-4 by the Texas Historical Commission; furthermore, Marshall received 2-5 the distinction of being named an All American City by the National 2-6 Municipal League in 1976; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Marshall has long been an outstanding place in which 2-8 to live, work, and raise a family, and it is indeed a privilege to 2-9 pay tribute to this community and its citizens at this time; now, 2-10 therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-12 hereby designate March 27-28, 2001, as Marshall Days at the State 2-13 Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation best wishes for an 2-14 enjoyable and informative stay in Austin.
