                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, Texas Tech University head football coach Spike
 1-2     Dykes is truly a coaching icon in the Lubbock community and for
 1-3     legions of fans across America, and his retirement following the
 1-4     1999 season is most deserving of special legislative recognition;
 1-5     and
 1-6           WHEREAS, This admirable gentleman spent 13 years as the head
 1-7     coach of the Red Raiders and guided them to an impressive 82-67-1
 1-8     record, while compiling a career coaching total of 172-106-1; Coach
 1-9     Dykes accrued more wins than any other coach in Texas Tech
1-10     University's storied football history; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Under his astute guidance, the Red Raiders became a
1-12     gridiron power and participated in seven bowl games, including
1-13     playing in the prestigious Cotton Bowl in 1995; in addition, Coach
1-14     Dykes holds several unique distinctions, such as being the first
1-15     coach in the nation to have produced two Doak Walker Award winners
1-16     and becoming the only Texas Tech coach to have defeated archrival
1-17     The University of Texas six times; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Born in Lubbock, Coach Dykes earned numerous
1-19     accolades during his long and distinguished coaching career; he
1-20     received Southwest Conference Coach of the Year honors three times
1-21     and was the first-ever Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year in 1996;
1-22     moreover, he was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches
1-23     Association Hall of Honor in 1991; and
1-24           WHEREAS, A 1959 graduate of Stephen F. Austin State
 2-1     University in Nacogdoches, Coach Dykes is known for the genuine
 2-2     compassion, love, and respect he had for his players and fellow
 2-3     coaches; his dignity, homespun sense of humor, and integrity earned
 2-4     him the admiration of college football coaches, players, and fans
 2-5     everywhere; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, The tradition of excellence that Coach Dykes
 2-7     established during his coaching career left an indelible mark on
 2-8     Texas high school and college sports, and it is indeed fitting to
 2-9     pay tribute to this West Texas coaching legend as he begins a new
2-10     chapter in his life; now, therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-12     hereby honor former Texas Tech University head football coach Spike
2-13     Dykes on his outstanding career and extend to him sincere best
2-14     wishes for continued happiness and good fortune; and, be it further
2-15           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-16     prepared for Coach Dykes as an expression of high regard by the
2-17     Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
