No. 248 1-2 (In the Senate - Received from the House May 11, 2001; 1-3 May 11, 2001, read first time and referred to Committee on 1-4 Administration; May 11, 2001, reported favorably by the following 1-5 vote: Yeas 3, Nays 0; May 11, 2001, sent to printer.) 1-6 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-7 WHEREAS, Over the last three decades, Meals on Wheels of 1-8 Amarillo has made an immeasurable contribution to its community, 1-9 and it is most deserving of special legislative recognition; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Established in September 1971, the Amarillo program 1-11 began as the cooperative effort of 12 local churches and St. 1-12 Anthony's Hospital, and its first delivery provided meals to 13 1-13 homebound individuals; Northwest Texas Hospital joined the program 1-14 in 1983, and the organization has expanded to now include more than 1-15 500 volunteers who help to feed 300 men and women every day; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Amarillo's Meals on Wheels program is completely 1-17 supported by community donations; meals are purchased from 1-18 participating hospital kitchens, enabling the program to fulfill 1-19 specific dietary needs, and are delivered to those unable to 1-20 prepare a meal for themselves; and 1-21 WHEREAS, These recipients receive much more than a nutritious 1-22 meal when a Meals on Wheels volunteer comes to their door; the 1-23 sharing of local news, care, and friendship often accompany the 1-24 entree; and 1-25 WHEREAS, Volunteers from corporations, civic groups, 1-26 churches, schools, and throughout the community have delivered more 1-27 than one million meals to the homebound of Amarillo since the 1-28 organization was established; and through their notable efforts, 1-29 they help people remain in their own homes where they are often 1-30 healthier and happier; now, therefore, be it 1-31 RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas 1-32 hereby commend all those associated with Meals on Wheels of 1-33 Amarillo for their laudable concern for the well-being of others; 1-34 and, be it further 1-35 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 1-36 prepared for Meals on Wheels of Amarillo as an expression of high 1-37 regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate. 1-38 * * * * *
