                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Madge Anna Stewart Keeton of Austin
 1-2     on April 3, 2001, at the age of 89 has greatly saddened the family
 1-3     and friends of this well-known and much-loved Austin resident; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, The widow of W. Page Keeton, longtime dean of The
 1-5     University of Texas School of Law, Mrs. Keeton was herself a
 1-6     fixture in the university community, where she volunteered in
 1-7     numerous organizations and where she skillfully handled the myriad
 1-8     responsibilities attendant on her position as spouse of one of the
 1-9     school's most eminent figures; she was actively involved as well in
1-10     many civic associations and was a valued member of University
1-11     United Methodist Church; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Mrs. Keeton was born May 29, 1911, in San Antonio
1-13     and raised in Atlanta; in 1931 she moved to Austin to attend The
1-14     University of Texas, where she earned a bachelor's degree in
1-15     English in 1935; possessing a lively interest in politics, she
1-16     leavened her literary studies with a law class, thereby meeting the
1-17     professor who would later become her husband; and
1-18           WHEREAS, While she gave generously of her energy and talents
1-19     to many groups, Mrs. Keeton's family always came first in her life,
1-20     and the support and nurture she gave to her husband and two
1-21     children were unqualified and unstinting; the son and daughter she
1-22     raised so well have gone on to achieve great prominence:  Richard
1-23     Keeton, as a highly respected lawyer in Houston, and Carole Keeton
1-24     Rylander, as a member of the Austin School Board, mayor of the city
 2-1     of Austin, member of the Texas Railroad Commission, and comptroller
 2-2     of the State of Texas; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, In time, Mrs. Keeton saw yet a third generation of
 2-4     her family ascend to influence in government circles, as two of her
 2-5     grandsons were tapped for service with President George W. Bush;
 2-6     Scott McClellan has taken on the duties of senior adviser and
 2-7     deputy press secretary for the president, while Dr. Mark McClellan
 2-8     has received a nomination to the Council of Economic Advisers; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, An effervescent woman whose care and adept efforts
2-10     cheered and heartened countless individuals, Mrs. Keeton will long
2-11     live on in the hearts of her family and all who count themselves
2-12     blessed to have known her; now, therefore, be it
2-13           RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-14     hereby pay tribute to the life of Madge Anna Stewart Keeton and
2-15     extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her
2-16     children, Richard Keeton and Carole Keeton Rylander; to her twin
2-17     sister, Mara Stewart Landry; to her five grandsons and four
2-18     great-granddaughters; and to all who treasured this remarkable
2-19     woman; and, be it further
2-20           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-21     prepared for the members of her family, and that when the Texas
2-22     House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in
2-23     memory of Madge Anna Stewart Keeton.
