HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, On May 25, 2001, Marshall Herklotz of Huntsville is
 1-2     retiring from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, drawing to
 1-3     a close 29 years of exceptional service to the department and to
 1-4     the citizens of the Lone Star State; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Herklotz was born in Cameron on
 1-6     May 17, 1951, and graduated from Lexington High School; he received
 1-7     a football scholarship to Texas A&M University, where he studied
 1-8     before graduating from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville
 1-9     with a degree in criminology and corrections; and
1-10           WHEREAS, In 1972, he began his career in criminal justice as
1-11     a correctional officer at what was then known as the Texas
1-12     Department of Corrections; he earned the respect and admiration of
1-13     his peers, demonstrating the integrity and fairness essential for
1-14     success in this demanding field, and was quickly promoted through
1-15     the ranks of the department; and    
1-16           WHEREAS, Named the Assistant Warden of the Year in 1982,
1-17     Mr. Herklotz served as a regional director for the Texas Department
1-18     of Criminal Justice before accepting the position of assistant
1-19     director for laundry and food services in 1994; since that time, he
1-20     has remained true to his "fair and firm" philosophy, and with his
1-21     belief that you should never talk down to anyone is a role model
1-22     and inspiration for those who have chosen to follow in his
1-23     footsteps; and
1-24           WHEREAS, Over the last three decades, Mr. Herklotz has
 2-1     dedicated himself to protecting the citizens of this great state,
 2-2     and he truly merits special recognition as he embarks on his
 2-3     well-deserved retirement; now, therefore, be it
 2-4           RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
 2-5     hereby commend Marshall Herklotz on his noteworthy tenure with the
 2-6     Texas Department of Criminal Justice and congratulate him on his
 2-7     retirement; and, be it further
 2-8           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 2-9     prepared for Mr. Herklotz as an expression of high regard by the
2-10     Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
