                                 A JOINT RESOLUTION
 1-1     proposing a constitutional amendment relating to the composition of
 1-2     the Texas House of Representatives.
 1-3           BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-4           SECTION 1. Section 2, Article III, Texas Constitution, is
 1-5     amended to read as follows:
 1-6           Sec. 2. (a)  The Senate shall consist of thirty-one members.
 1-7           (b)  The House of Representatives shall consist of 150
 1-8     members, except the legislature by general law at its first regular
 1-9     session after the publication of each United States decennial
1-10     census may increase the number of members of the House by not more
1-11     than five.  The number of members of the House may not be increased
1-12     to more than 200.  An increase in the number of members of the
1-13     House applies to each apportionment of the House that occurs after
1-14     the publication of the decennial census.
1-15           (c)  The legislature may not increase the number of members
1-16     of the House under Subsection (b) of this section before the
1-17     publication of the United States decennial census for the year
1-18     2010.  This subsection expires January 1, 2013.
1-19           SECTION 2. This proposed constitutional amendment shall be
1-20     submitted to the voters at an election to be held November 6, 2001.
1-21     The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against the
1-22     proposition: "The constitutional amendment to authorize an increase
1-23     in the number of members of the Texas House of Representatives by
1-24     not more than 5 members every 10 years, not to exceed a total of
 2-1     200 members."
