                                 A JOINT RESOLUTION
 1-1     proposing a constitutional amendment to abolish the office of
 1-2     constable in Collingsworth County.
 1-3           BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-4           SECTION 1.  Section 18, Article V, Texas Constitution, is
 1-5     amended by adding Subsection (h) to read as follows:
 1-6           (h)  The office of Constable in Collingsworth County is
 1-7     abolished.  The functions of the office are transferred to the
 1-8     County Sheriff.  However, the office of Constable is abolished
 1-9     under this subsection only if, at the statewide election at which
1-10     the constitutional amendment providing for the abolition of the
1-11     office in Collingsworth County is submitted to and approved by the
1-12     voters, a majority of the voters of Collingsworth County voting on
1-13     the question at that election also favor the amendment.
1-14           SECTION 2.  The following temporary provision is added to the
1-15     Texas Constitution:
1-16           TEMPORARY PROVISION.  The abolition of the office of
1-17     constable in Collingsworth County under the constitutional
1-18     amendment proposed by the 77th Legislature, Regular Session, 2001,
1-19     providing for the abolition of the office in that county takes
1-20     effect January 1, 2002, if the conditions of Section 18(h), Article
1-21     V, as added by that constitutional amendment, are met. This
1-22     provision expires January 2, 2002.
1-23           SECTION 3.  This proposed constitutional amendment shall be
1-24     submitted to the voters at an election to be held on November 6,
 2-1     2001.  The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against
 2-2     the proposition: "The constitutional amendment providing for the
 2-3     abolition of the office of constable in Collingsworth County."
