                                 A JOINT RESOLUTION
 1-1     proposing a constitutional amendment to abolish the office of
 1-2     constable in Jack County.
 1-3           BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-4           SECTION 1.  Section 18, Article V, Texas Constitution, is
 1-5     amended by adding Subsection (h) to read as follows:
 1-6           (h)  The office of Constable in Jack County is abolished.
 1-7     The functions of the office are transferred to the County Sheriff.
 1-8     However, the office of Constable is abolished under this subsection
 1-9     only if, at the statewide election at which the constitutional
1-10     amendment providing for the abolition of the office in Jack County
1-11     is submitted to the voters, a majority of the voters of Jack County
1-12     voting on the question at that election also favor the amendment.
1-13           SECTION 2.  The following temporary provision is added to the
1-14     Texas Constitution:
1-15           TEMPORARY PROVISION.  The abolition of the office of
1-16     constable in Jack County under the constitutional amendment
1-17     proposed by the 77th Legislature, Regular Session, 2001, providing
1-18     for the abolition of the office in that county takes effect January
1-19     1, 2002, if the conditions of Section 18(h), Article V, as added by
1-20     that constitutional amendment, are met.  This provision expires
1-21     January 2, 2002.
1-22           SECTION 3.  This proposed constitutional amendment shall be
1-23     submitted to the voters at an election to be held on November 6,
1-24     2001.  The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against
 2-1     the proposition:  "The constitutional amendment providing for the
 2-2     abolition of the office of constable in Jack County."
