No. 7 77R3147 JKB-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On February 19, 2001, Larry Shaw is retiring as 1-2 Duncanville city manager, and his 33 years of outstanding municipal 1-3 service indeed merit special recognition; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Mr. Shaw received a bachelor of science degree from 1-5 East Texas State University in 1971 and earned a master of arts 1-6 degree in recreation administration from the University of Northern 1-7 Colorado in 1977; while still a college student, he went to work 1-8 for the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Mesquite, 1-9 where he held several positions; and 1-10 WHEREAS, In June 1977, this noteworthy Texan began his 1-11 lengthy tenure with the City of Duncanville, winning appointment as 1-12 the director of parks and recreation; a man of diligence and 1-13 perseverance, he continued to ascend the ranks of city government, 1-14 holding the positions of community service director, assistant city 1-15 manager, acting city manager, and, finally, city manager, a post he 1-16 assumed in 1996; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Under his progressive leadership, the city of 1-18 Duncanville has witnessed the completion of many projects, 1-19 including a new library and community center, the Dr Pepper 1-20 StarCenter, Harrington Park, the D. L. Hopkins, Jr., Senior Center, 1-21 and the Kidsville playground in Armstrong Park; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Mr. Shaw has been a leader in his profession, 1-23 devoting substantial time to the North Texas, Texas, and 1-24 international city management associations and serving as 2-1 director-at-large for the Texas Recreation and Parks Society board; 2-2 and 2-3 WHEREAS, A firm believer in community involvement, he has 2-4 also served on the boards of Leadership Southwest, Best Southwest, 2-5 and the Duncanville Chamber of Commerce, held many positions of 2-6 leadership in the Texas Amateur Athletic Association, and given 2-7 generously of his time and talents to the Lions Club and Rotary 2-8 Club; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Larry Shaw has dedicated more than three decades to 2-10 the betterment of cities in the Lone Star State, always acting with 2-11 integrity and fairness, and as he embarks on a well-deserved 2-12 retirement it is truly a privilege to join his many friends and 2-13 colleagues in saluting this distinguished public servant; now, 2-14 therefore, be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-16 Legislature hereby pay tribute to Larry Shaw on the occasion of his 2-17 retirement as city manager for the City of Duncanville in 2-18 recognition of his 33 years of outstanding service to the citizens 2-19 of Texas; and, be it further 2-20 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-21 prepared for Mr. Shaw as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-22 House of Representatives.
