R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, January 24, 2001, marks the beginning of the Chinese
 1-2     New Year, and this holiday offers a fitting occasion to honor the
 1-3     Chinese community of El Paso and its many contributions to this
 1-4     fine city; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Chinese people around the world are celebrating the
 1-6     beginning of the year 4699, the year of the Serpent, on the Chinese
 1-7     lunar calendar; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, El Paso is home to some 3,000 Chinese, who are a
 1-9     vital part of this city's mosaic; their numbers include educators,
1-10     many small-business owners, and an appellate judge; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Each year the Chinese Benevolent Society performs a
1-12     laudable service by bringing together the Chinese community and its
1-13     friends to celebrate the Chinese New Year; and
1-14           WHEREAS, The Chinese in El Paso play a significant role in
1-15     the business, professional, and cultural life of this city, and it
1-16     is a great pleasure to salute them on the occasion of the Chinese
1-17     New Year; now, therefore, be it
1-18           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
1-19     Legislature hereby recognize the Chinese community of El Paso on
1-20     the occasion of the Chinese New Year 4699, January 24, 2001, and
1-21     that it extend to all members of the community its appreciation for
1-22     the richness they add to this vibrant metropolis.
