R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Weslaco Mayor Gene A. Braught was accorded a
 1-2     well-deserved honor with the endowment of the Gene A. Braught Chair
 1-3     of Musical Conducting at the University of Oklahoma, and this
 1-4     achievement represents the high esteem in which he is held by many
 1-5     people; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Before joining the University of Oklahoma faculty in
 1-7     1962, Dr. Braught was the band director at Del Mar College and,
 1-8     during his years in Corpus Christi, he founded and served as
 1-9     musical conductor of the Corpus Christi Municipal Band; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Dr. Braught taught conducting and served as a
1-11     professional conductor at the University of Oklahoma in Norman for
1-12     25 years, holding such prestigious positions as director of
1-13     university bands and associate director of the University of
1-14     Oklahoma School of Music in the College of Fine Arts; and
1-15           WHEREAS, During his outstanding tenure, he earned the title
1-16     and privileges of "Director Emeritus of University Bands" and
1-17     "Professor Emeritus of Music"; for two decades, Dr. Braught
1-18     conducted the professionally produced "Broadway Shows" for the
1-19     university's school of music, and he has led clinics and workshops
1-20     at more than 30 universities, as well as conducted high school
1-21     all-state and honor bands and orchestras in 37 states; and
1-22           WHEREAS, A former vice president of the National Band
1-23     Directors and College Band Directors associations, Dr. Braught has
1-24     been inducted into the Band Directors Hall of Fame, has served on
 2-1     the board of the South Texas Symphony Orchestra, and has performed
 2-2     with renowned musicians, including the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the
 2-3     Karl L. King Band, and the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra;
 2-4     moreover, his numerous accomplishments in the field of music have
 2-5     earned him listings in Who's Who in American Music and Who's Who in
 2-6     International Music, and many other honors; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Returning to Texas after retiring from the
 2-8     University of Oklahoma in 1985, Dr. Braught has distinguished
 2-9     himself outside of the musical sphere; a former district governor
2-10     for Rotary International and president of three Rotary Clubs, he
2-11     has been elected mayor of Weslaco for four consecutive terms and
2-12     has played an integral role in helping the city grow and prosper;
2-13     and
2-14           WHEREAS, Donating his time and talents to a number of
2-15     professional, civic, and philanthropic organizations in Weslaco and
2-16     the Rio Grande Valley, Dr. Braught is a shining light in the
2-17     community and to fellow Texans everywhere, and it is indeed
2-18     appropriate to pay tribute to him at this time; now, therefore, be
2-19     it
2-20           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-21     Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Gene A. Braught on the
2-22     endowment of a chair in his honor at the University of Oklahoma and
2-23     commend him for his lifetime of achievement; and, be it further
2-24           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-25     prepared for Dr. Braught as an expression of high regard by the
2-26     Texas House of Representatives.
