No. 29 77R2957 MJS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to join 1-2 the residents of Denton County in the joyous celebration of Denton 1-3 County Days at the State Capitol on February 26-27, 2001; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Denton County was created in 1846 and named for John 1-5 B. Denton, a pioneer lawyer, preacher, and militiaman; and 1-6 WHEREAS, After railroads reached Denton in the 1880s, the 1-7 county's population and economy experienced steady growth, 1-8 production of cotton and wheat expanded rapidly, and Denton County 1-9 became known as an agricultural trade center; in 1900 the community 1-10 of Krum was reportedly the largest inland wheat market in the 1-11 United States; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the county has continued to 1-13 grow and prosper while retaining its rich heritage and history; its 1-14 diverse and robust economy now revolves around government 1-15 services, tourism, various industries, and numerous other business 1-16 enterprises; and 1-17 WHEREAS, The city of Denton, established in 1857 as the 1-18 county seat, has become one of the state's leading centers of 1-19 education, with the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's 1-20 University drawing thousands of students to their undergraduate and 1-21 graduate programs; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Winner of the 1999 Great American Main Street City 1-23 award, Denton also features the historic Denton County Courthouse 1-24 and the Texas Motor Speedway, the second-largest sports facility in 2-1 the United States; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Denton County has a number of celebrated annual 2-3 events, such as the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, North Texas State 2-4 Fair, Arts, Antiques, and Autos, and the Festival of Lights; in 2-5 addition to these attractions, the Little Chapel-in-the-Woods, 2-6 University of North Texas Planetarium, Texas Fashion Collection, 2-7 and Rare Book Room and Texana Collections all draw a host of 2-8 visitors; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Denton County is one of the Lone Star State's 2-10 greatest assets and an outstanding place in which to live, work, 2-11 and raise a family, and it is most appropriate to pay tribute to 2-12 this remarkable county and its citizens on this notable occasion; 2-13 now, therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-15 Legislature hereby recognize February 26-27, 2001, as Denton County 2-16 Days at the State Capitol and commend the county's citizens for 2-17 their many significant contributions to our state.
