R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The family and friends of Lanier Hester of El Campo
 1-2     are deeply saddened by the passing of this esteemed gentleman on
 1-3     April 28, 2000, at the age of 83; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Born in Denton, Mr. Hester attended North Texas
 1-5     State Teacher's College, now called the University of North Texas,
 1-6     where he earned a bachelor of science degree; he later studied at
 1-7     the University of Houston and received his master of administrative
 1-8     education degree in 1950; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Mr. Hester, nicknamed "Shorty" in college,
1-10     accomplished a host of sporting feats that earned him induction
1-11     into the North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame on October 18, 1997;
1-12     despite his small stature, he lettered in basketball and football
1-13     and was named an all-conference quarterback his junior and senior
1-14     years; he led his football team to a Lone Star Conference
1-15     championship and helped his basketball team win a conference title
1-16     and a berth in the first National Collegiate Basketball Tournament;
1-17     and
1-18           WHEREAS, This distinguished Texan answered his country's call
1-19     to duty and served in the United States Navy as a chief specialist
1-20     in training during World War II; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Having worked as a coach for El Campo schools before
1-22     the war, Mr. Hester was employed by Markham High School as
1-23     principal and coach after World War II; in 1950, he and his loving
1-24     wife, Dale, returned to El Campo where he became business manager
 2-1     and tax assessor-collector for the El Campo ISD, giving many years
 2-2     of loyal employment before retiring in 1981; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Mr. Hester was a member of the First United
 2-4     Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for 25 years; he was also
 2-5     active in the El Campo Lions Club and Masonic Lodge, holding all
 2-6     elective offices in each, in addition to contributing his time and
 2-7     energy as chairman and District 3 president of the Wharton County
 2-8     Teachers Credit Union; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Hester contributed to the
2-10     betterment of his community and his profession, giving generously
2-11     of his time and talents to help those around him; although he will
2-12     be deeply missed, his spirit remains in the hearts of the many
2-13     people whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
2-14           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-15     Legislature hereby honor the memory of Lanier Hester and extend
2-16     sincere sympathy to the members of his family:  to his daughters,
2-17     Rosalyn Hester Baker and Marilyn Hester Brandl; to his nephew,
2-18     J. C. Hester; and to his numerous other relatives and friends; and,
2-19     be it further
2-20           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-21     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-22     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-23     Lanier Hester.
