R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, For more than 15 years, Dr. Harmon Kelley and
 1-2     Mrs. Harriet Kelley of San Antonio have amassed an outstanding
 1-3     collection of works by many renowned African American artists and
 1-4     have generously shared it with a grateful community; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, The Kelley Collection includes works by a number of
 1-6     the most prominent African American artists of the 19th and 20th
 1-7     centuries, including Edward Mitchell Bannister, Henry O. Tanner,
 1-8     William Harper, William Johnson, Eldzier Cortor, Edmonia Lewis,
 1-9     John Biggers, and Elizabeth Catlett; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Dr. and Mrs. Kelley have enriched the lives of many
1-11     people who viewed their collection when it was presented as a major
1-12     exhibit at the San Antonio Museum of Art in 1994 or when it toured
1-13     the country as a traveling exhibit to El Paso, Atlanta, and
1-14     Chattanooga; and
1-15           WHEREAS, To that end, the couple created the Harmon and
1-16     Harriet Kelley Foundation for the Arts, which enables them to loan
1-17     the works to various museums, including the world-renowned
1-18     Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.; the much-admired collection also
1-19     received well-deserved recognition when it was featured in the
1-20     November 2000 issue of Southern Living magazine; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Through the years, Dr. and Mrs. Kelley have
1-22     cultivated a remarkable collection of African American works of
1-23     art, and their willingness to share these important  works for the
1-24     enjoyment of their fellow citizens indeed merits special
 2-1     legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
 2-2           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-3     Legislature hereby commend Dr. Harmon Kelley and Mrs. Harriet
 2-4     Kelley for their contributions to the advancement and enjoyment of
 2-5     African American art and extend to them sincere best wishes for
 2-6     continued success and happiness; and, be it further
 2-7           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 2-8     prepared for Dr. and Mrs. Kelley as an expression of high regard by
 2-9     the Texas House of Representatives.
