R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Today, there are approximately three million 1-2 citizens in Texas that are 60 years of age and older who are 1-3 continuing to help Texas grow and prosper, and it is projected that 1-4 in 20 years that number will increase to more than five million 1-5 Texans; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Imparting their unique wisdom and knowledge, these 1-7 senior citizens reflect the state's cultural, spiritual, and ethnic 1-8 diversity, and have devoted their lives to making Texas a better 1-9 place in which to live, work, and raise families while serving as 1-10 teachers and role models for younger generations; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Countless elderly Texans relish their role as 1-12 grandparents and mentors, instilling many of the same values and 1-13 principles in their grandchildren that were taught to them by their 1-14 parents and grandparents; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Helping to bridge the gap between past, present, and 1-16 future, senior citizens in Texas have made immeasurable 1-17 contributions in such important areas as education, industry, 1-18 agriculture, space exploration, information technology, music, 1-19 arts, and sports; furthermore, they have ably defended our nation's 1-20 freedoms so that democracy could flourish in the United States; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Texas has reaped the benefits 1-22 of senior citizens' experience, vision, and leadership, and it is 1-23 most fitting to honor them for their numerous good works and deeds; 1-24 now, therefore, be it 2-1 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-2 Legislature hereby recognize February 6, 2001, as Senior Day in 2-3 Texas and encourage Texans to observe and celebrate the 2-4 contributions of these treasured citizens with appropriate 2-5 ceremonies and festivities.
