R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to join 1-2 the citizens of Angelina County in the joyous celebration of 1-3 Angelina County Day at the State Capitol on January 25, 2001; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Angelina County is located amid the rolling hills 1-5 and dense forests of East Texas and is bounded on the north by the 1-6 Angelina River and on the south by the Neches River; organized on 1-7 April 22, 1846, it was named for a Hainai Indian girl who, legend 1-8 has it, helped early Spanish missionaries of the area around 1690; 1-9 and 1-10 WHEREAS, Through the years a variety of industries have 1-11 flourished in Angelina County, such as farming and manufacturing, 1-12 but the region has benefitted the most from the lumber industry; 1-13 since the arrival of the railroads in the 1880s, the county has 1-14 consistently been a national hub of timber and forest products; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Lufkin, the county seat, is home to nearly half the 1-16 county's total population, which is approximately 80,000; in 1-17 addition, the city features such attractions as the Texas Forestry 1-18 Museum, the Lufkin Historical and Creative Arts Center, and the 1-19 Ellen Trout Zoo; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Angelina County is also an ideal site for anyone who 1-21 enjoys outdoor activities; Sam Rayburn Reservoir, the region's 1-22 largest lake, offers ample opportunities for fishing, swimming, and 1-23 boating, while Angelina National Forest provides a prime example of 1-24 Texas' natural splendor; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Angelina County has long been a wonderful place in 2-2 which to live, work, and raise a family, and it is indeed a 2-3 privilege to recognize the many contributions the county has made 2-4 to the Lone Star State and to pay tribute to all its fine citizens 2-5 on this special occasion; now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-7 Legislature hereby recognize January 25, 2001, as Angelina County 2-8 Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation a 2-9 warm welcome and best wishes for a memorable visit to Austin.
