R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Dorothy H. McClinton of San Antonio has been chosen 1-2 by the Huston-Tillotson College National Alumni Association to 1-3 receive the Outstanding Alumnus award presented by the National 1-4 Alumni Council of the United Negro College Fund; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Mrs. McClinton graduated from Huston-Tillotson in 1-6 1947 with a bachelor's degree in business administration and earned 1-7 a master's degree in business education from Texas Southern 1-8 University in 1960; she has done graduate study at a number of 1-9 schools, among them Trinity University, The University of Texas at 1-10 Austin, Colorado State University, and San Diego State University; 1-11 and 1-12 WHEREAS, After receiving her undergraduate degree, 1-13 Mrs. McClinton spent 15 years teaching school in Seguin, where she 1-14 instructed classes at the elementary, middle, and high school 1-15 levels; and 1-16 WHEREAS, In 1964 she joined the faculty of St. Philip's 1-17 College in San Antonio as a professor of business education; during 1-18 her highly successful tenure at St. Philip's, Mrs. McClinton held 1-19 the post of department chair, researched educational policy on a 1-20 fellowship from the Institute for Educational Leadership, and 1-21 served a two-year term with San Antonio's Higher Education 1-22 Authority; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Since her retirement Mrs. McClinton has devoted her 1-24 tremendous energy and talent to the service of Huston-Tillotson 2-1 College and the United Negro College Fund, and her numerous and 2-2 diverse undertakings in their behalf have been of inestimable 2-3 value; and 2-4 WHEREAS, A member of Huston-Tillotson's board of trustees 2-5 since 1987, Mrs. McClinton has been a key force in the college's 2-6 fund-raising; in addition to her personal generosity, she has 2-7 worked to raise money through various events, such as an annual 2-8 choir concert that she oversees, and through fund-raising 2-9 campaigns; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Mrs. McClinton has also been involved in 2-11 Huston-Tillotson programs to recruit students, serving as first 2-12 chair of the international student recruitment drive, helping to 2-13 present Huston-Tillotson Day at churches and cultural centers, and 2-14 planning visits to the school for junior and senior high school 2-15 youth; moreover, she has worked tirelessly with a variety of alumni 2-16 groups to foster ties among former students and between alumni and 2-17 Huston-Tillotson; and 2-18 WHEREAS, This outstanding Texan has given vital support as 2-19 well to the United Negro College Fund; since 1987 she has served on 2-20 the fund's San Antonio board and participated in annual 2-21 fund-raising in San Antonio and in Austin, chairing some half-dozen 2-22 telethons over the years; and 2-23 WHEREAS, Mrs. McClinton has been a valued member of St. Paul 2-24 United Methodist Church for nearly half a century, once again 2-25 contributing in many different ways and capacities; she is also a 2-26 life member of the NAACP and a member of several neighborhood and 2-27 community associations, including Communities Organized for Public 3-1 Service (COPS); and 3-2 WHEREAS, The many accolades bestowed on Mrs. McClinton 3-3 include a number of awards for leadership and achievement, 3-4 designation as a professor emerita of St. Philip's College, and 3-5 listing in the 2000-2001 edition of Who's Who of American Women; 3-6 and 3-7 WHEREAS, Through her unwavering commitment to the cause of 3-8 education and to Huston-Tillotson College and through her endeavors 3-9 to build a stronger society, Mrs. McClinton has won the esteem and 3-10 deep affection of countless friends and associates, and it is a 3-11 pleasure to join them in paying tribute to this exceptional woman; 3-12 now, therefore, be it 3-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 3-14 Legislature hereby congratulate Dorothy H. McClinton on her 3-15 selection by the Huston-Tillotson College National Alumni 3-16 Association to receive the Outstanding Alumnus award presented by 3-17 the National Alumni Council of the United Negro College Fund; and, 3-18 be it further 3-19 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-20 prepared for Mrs. McClinton as an expression of high regard by the 3-21 Texas House of Representatives.
