R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The members of the Texas House of Representatives
 1-2     are proud to honor Wanda Smith for her exemplary service as
 1-3     superintendent of Keene Independent School District; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, The longest-serving female superintendent in Texas,
 1-5     Mrs. Smith has given more than 20 years of dedicated employment to
 1-6     Keene ISD, working diligently in her district to promote education
 1-7     and improve the learning environment in numerous ways; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Before becoming superintendent, she initiated
 1-9     several noteworthy endeavors, including the painting of school
1-10     walls, and a breakfast program in which she helped to prepare and
1-11     serve the meals each morning was instituted; since assuming the
1-12     post of superintendent, Mrs. Smith has continued to strive for
1-13     excellence and has brought to fruition such developments as the
1-14     construction of a local high school; and
1-15           WHEREAS, In addition to performing her many duties as
1-16     superintendent, from 1989 to 1990 Mrs. Smith held the position of
1-17     president of the Texas Association of Community Schools and was the
1-18     first female to have done so in the association's history; she also
1-19     contributes much of her time and energy to civic organizations,
1-20     serving on various boards and volunteering for programs such as
1-21     Meals on Wheels; and
1-22           WHEREAS, This esteemed woman is a valued member of the
1-23     Advisory Board to Texas School Business Magazine, the
1-24     Superintendent's Advisory Council to the Commissioner, and the
 2-1     Advisory Committee for Southwestern Adventist University and Hill
 2-2     College; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Before starting her tenure with Keene ISD, she
 2-4     served as an educator in a nearby community, working as a teacher,
 2-5     counselor, and assistant principal; she remains a devoted wife to
 2-6     Don Smith, a loving mother of four children, grandmother of nine
 2-7     grandchildren, and great-grandmother of one great-grandchild; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, Highly respected by faculty and students, she is
 2-9     held in great esteem by all those who know her, and it is a
2-10     privilege to honor her at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-12     Legislature hereby commend Wanda Smith for her outstanding service
2-13     as superintendent of Keene ISD and extend to her sincere best
2-14     wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
2-15           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-16     prepared for Mrs. Smith as an expression of high regard by the
2-17     Texas House of Representatives.
