R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, For 121 years the Texas State Teachers Association 1-2 (TSTA) has served the State of Texas, its citizens, and, most 1-3 especially, its children in furthering the education of the 1-4 citizenry of our great state from kindergarten to high school; and 1-5 WHEREAS, At its first gathering in Mexia, Texas, in June 1-6 1880, the TSTA drafted its first legislative resolution, which 1-7 called on the Texas Legislature to establish a state university in 1-8 Texas, which the Legislature did just four years later; that 1-9 university is known today as The University of Texas at Austin; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the Texas State Teachers 1-11 Association has been the leader in working for the betterment of 1-12 children and education by advocating historic legislation, 1-13 including child labor laws, women's suffrage, mandatory schooling, 1-14 migrant education, the minimum foundation program, the Gilmer-Aikin 1-15 bills, civil rights legislation, and state implementation of Title 1-16 I and Head Start Programs, to name only a few; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Today TSTA continues its notable efforts to better 1-18 education in Texas by working for improved conditions in the 1-19 classrooms and school buildings, increased professional salaries, 1-20 and a statewide health insurance program for employees, retirees, 1-21 and families; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Led by current president and our colleague, the 1-23 Honorable Ignacio Salinas, Jr., members of the Texas State Teachers 1-24 Association are gathering in the State Capitol today to continue to 2-1 press their cause for excellence in education in every Texas 2-2 classroom, and it is most appropriate to take this opportunity to 2-3 welcome them; now, therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-5 Legislature hereby recognize January 31, 2001, as Texas State 2-6 Teachers Association Day and commend its members for the service 2-7 and dedication they have shown to the students of Texas; and, be it 2-8 further 2-9 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-10 prepared for the Texas State Teachers Association as an expression 2-11 of appreciation and high regard from the Texas House of 2-12 Representatives.
