No. 156 77R4870 MW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On January 31, 2001, after an outstanding tenure of 1-2 nearly 17 years, Anna Washington Curtis is retiring as 1-3 administrator of the City of Houston's Kashmere Multi-Service 1-4 Center; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Ms. Curtis was born in Houston and graduated with 1-6 honors from Phillis Wheatly Senior High School; her 50 years in the 1-7 Houston workforce began at the W. T. Grant Company, where she spent 1-8 18 years and became the first African American supervisor of the 1-9 lunch department; and 1-10 WHEREAS, In June 1970 Ms. Curtis graduated magna cum laude 1-11 from Texas Southern University with a bachelor of arts degree in 1-12 social work, enabling her to fulfill a lifelong dream and enter 1-13 that career field; and 1-14 WHEREAS, After volunteering for a year with the Children and 1-15 Youth Program of Julia C. Hester House, Inc., a United Way social 1-16 service agency in Houston's Fifth Ward, Ms. Curtis joined the staff 1-17 of Hester House and ultimately became program director; and 1-18 WHEREAS, This notable Texan began employment in 1977 with the 1-19 Houston Department of Health and Human Services, working as an 1-20 administrative assistant at the Fifth Ward Multi-Service Center; 1-21 seven years later she was hired as administrator of the Kashmere 1-22 Multi-Service Center, a post she has ably filled to this day; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Her retirement notwithstanding, Ms. Curtis looks 1-24 forward to spending still more time working with her favorite 2-1 people, children and senior citizens, as well as traveling; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Now, as she brings to a close a devoted and fruitful 2-3 career, it is truly a privilege to pay tribute to her for a 2-4 distinguished record of leadership and dedication; now, therefore, 2-5 be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-7 Legislature hereby honor Anna Washington Curtis on her retirement 2-8 from the Kashmere Multi-Service Center and extend to her best 2-9 wishes for continued success and happiness in all her endeavors; 2-10 and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-12 prepared for Ms. Curtis as an expression of high regard by the 2-13 Texas House of Representatives.
