R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Married Ladies Social, Art & Charity Club of 1-2 America, Inc., is celebrating its 98th birthday with the theme 1-3 "Heart to Heart for a Better Community," on Saturday, February 3, 1-4 2001, and this outstanding occasion is indeed worthy of special 1-5 recognition; and 1-6 WHEREAS, This celebration is dedicated to the courageous 1-7 spirit of the 12 ladies who founded the club in September 1902 and 1-8 to the accomplishments of nine outstanding Community Women and Men 1-9 of Courage; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Since its incorporation in 1929 and well before, 1-11 this organization has served as the oldest club for African 1-12 American women, defining a special mission to provide charity and 1-13 various social undertakings to the community around them; and 1-14 WHEREAS, The organization has been an inspiration to the 1-15 young and old alike by providing programs that spark an interest 1-16 along intellectual, industrial, and artistic lines; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Presently the Club House located on 1814 Southmore 1-18 has been dedicated to the exceptional women of public service in 1-19 this organization; and 1-20 WHEREAS, The members have remained steadfast in support of 1-21 groups such as the Hester Home, YWCA, Eliza Johnson Home for the 1-22 Aged, Riverside General Hospital, Women Helping Women, Project Row 1-23 Houses, and Hartman Middle School; and 1-24 WHEREAS, They have continued to put as a top priority 2-1 graduating high school and college students, providing them with 2-2 financial aid to attain an education; and 2-3 WHEREAS, After nine decades of gracious service in the 2-4 community, the organization will continue to put as their most 2-5 important priority aiding other nonprofit groups and causes, 2-6 helping to hand out scholarships to bright young students, and 2-7 reaching out to both the young and old; now, therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-9 Legislature hereby commend the Married Ladies Social, Art & Charity 2-10 Club of America, Inc., for their diligence and dedication in the 2-11 community for 98 years and extend to them our sincere best wishes 2-12 for continued success and enrichment; and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-14 prepared for the honorees of the "Heart to Heart for a Better 2-15 Community" anniversary celebration, which includes Tamara Anderson, 2-16 Professor Emmanuel Anyakwu, Anna Pearl Barrett, Jean LaNeil 2-17 Caldwell, Betty Hicks Johnson, Sarah Caldwell Lancelin, Monica Ann 2-18 Middleton, Ella M.
