                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Texas music legend Doug Sahm on
 1-2     November 18, 1999, at the age of 58, brought a great loss to his
 1-3     family and friends, as well as to his many loyal fans throughout
 1-4     the world; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, With a sound uniquely his own, Mr. Sahm earned
 1-6     recognition as a prodigy on the steel guitar, mandolin, and fiddle
 1-7     and enjoyed praise in several musical genres, including country,
 1-8     rock and roll, Tex-Mex, and blues; this beloved Texan was truly an
 1-9     artistic genius whose noteworthy contributions will not soon be
1-10     forgotten; and
1-11           WHEREAS, A San Antonio native, he began his career at only
1-12     five years old by singing "Teardrops in My Heart" on a local radio
1-13     station; by age 11, he had already become a featured player on the
1-14     radio program Louisiana Hayride and had performed on stage with
1-15     such famous country singers as Hank Williams and Faron Young; and
1-16           WHEREAS, After declining a regular spot on the Grand Ole Opry
1-17     in Nashville in order to finish junior high school, Mr. Sahm
1-18     continued to perform locally, opening for several area bands, and
1-19     released numerous singles of his own; and
1-20           WHEREAS, In the 1960s, he formed the internationally
1-21     acclaimed Sir Douglas Quintet and released the hit track "She's
1-22     About a Mover"; adored by both fans and fellow performers, he
1-23     shared the stage with such renowned singers as Bob Dylan and Jerry
1-24     Garcia; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Mr. Sahm continued to earn praise when he formed the
 2-2     Texas Tornados and produced six well-received albums, winning a
 2-3     Grammy Award in the process; in addition, he founded a record
 2-4     label, Tornado Records, in 1999, and produced much of his own
 2-5     material as well as albums for several other area musicians; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, A talented performer and producer, Doug Sahm was a
 2-7     respected and cherished Texas icon, and although he is missed by
 2-8     many, his spirit lives on in the superb music he made and in the
 2-9     hearts and minds of the people whose lives he touched; now,
2-10     therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-12     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Doug Sahm and extend
2-13     sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his children,
2-14     Cheryl, Shandon, and Shawn Sahm; to his brother, Vic Sahm; and to
2-15     his many other relatives, friends, and fans; and, be it further
2-16           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-17     prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
2-18     Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Doug Sahm.
