No. 202 77R5309 MJS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On February 8, 2001, many proud residents from West 1-2 will gather in Austin to celebrate West Day at the State Capitol; 1-3 and 1-4 WHEREAS, Established in 1881, this charming town in McLennan 1-5 County was named for prominent businessman, landowner, and 1-6 postmaster, Thomas West; originally a farming community, West has 1-7 grown through the years and now has a diverse economy that includes 1-8 varied manufacturing; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Many citizens of West are of Czechoslovakian 1-10 descent, and the city recognizes this part of its unique heritage 1-11 with an annual Westfest celebration that draws visitors from across 1-12 the Lone Star State and features music, arts and crafts, and 1-13 traditional foods, such as sausage, homemade dumplings, apple 1-14 strudel, and sumptuous fruit and meat kolaches; in addition, the 1-15 city earned the notable honors of being designated as the Czech 1-16 Heritage Capital of the State of Texas and home of the official 1-17 kolache by the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas; and 1-18 WHEREAS, This thriving small Texas town is also home to more 1-19 than 90 businesses, a hospital, a library, and the Katy Depot 1-20 Museum; residents and visitors can keep up with all the news and 1-21 events in West and the rest of the state in the West News, a weekly 1-22 newspaper that was established in 1889 and holds the distinction of 1-23 being the oldest business in the city; and 1-24 WHEREAS, Located a scant 80 miles south of Dallas, West 2-1 provides its citizens with a splendid combination of small-town 2-2 virtues and access to big-city life; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Today, West has a population of more than 2,800 2-4 people and remains one of the Lone Star State's great assets; it is 2-5 an outstanding place in which to live, work, and raise a family, 2-6 and it is most appropriate to pay tribute to it at this time; now, 2-7 therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-9 Legislature hereby recognize February 8, 2001, as West Day at the 2-10 State Capitol and extend to its citizens sincere best wishes for 2-11 future success and happiness.
