R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The year 2001 marks the 100th anniversary of Texas 1-2 Woman's University, and this noteworthy occasion provides a fitting 1-3 opportunity to recognize this outstanding institution of higher 1-4 learning; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Originally known as the Girls Industrial College, 1-6 the school was created by the 27th Texas Legislature in 1901 and 1-7 had an initial enrollment of 186 students; its name was changed to 1-8 Texas Woman's University in 1957, and today it boasts more than 1-9 8,400 students from near and abroad, including 50 foreign 1-10 countries; and 1-11 WHEREAS, This distinguished university offers more than 100 1-12 undergraduate and 23 doctoral degree programs in such fields as 1-13 occupational therapy, physical therapy, library science, and dance; 1-14 in its century of existence, Texas Woman's University has awarded 1-15 over 70,000 degrees and has produced more health care professionals 1-16 than any other school in the state; and 1-17 WHEREAS, In addition, the school has taken advantage of 1-18 technological advances to expand its educational services, 1-19 including now offering postgraduate degrees through distance 1-20 learning; this progressive approach to education has been 1-21 immeasurably beneficial to countless students through the years, 1-22 and the commitment of the university's faculty and staff has 1-23 ensured that its students achieve their academic goals and are 1-24 prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Texas Woman's University is also the home to many 2-2 significant attractions, including the extensive collection of 2-3 books, periodicals, manuscripts, photographs, and other materials 2-4 on the history of women found in its main library; moreover, it is 2-5 the home of the Little Chapel-in-the-Woods, an impressive 2-6 structure designed by 300 students and dedicated by First Lady 2-7 Eleanor Roosevelt on November 1, 1939; and 2-8 WHEREAS, For a century, Texas Woman's University has provided 2-9 a notable service to this state, and it is indeed a privilege to 2-10 pay tribute to all the students, faculty, and staff of this 2-11 exceptional school as they celebrate its 100th anniversary; now, 2-12 therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-14 Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of Texas 2-15 Woman's University and extend to all those associated with this 2-16 fine school sincere best wishes for continued success.
