                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Today, there are approximately three million
 1-2     citizens in Texas  60 years of age or older who are continuing to
 1-3     help Texas grow and prosper, and it is projected that in 20 years
 1-4     that number will increase to more than five million Texans; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Imparting their unique wisdom and knowledge, these
 1-6     senior citizens reflect the state's cultural, spiritual, and ethnic
 1-7     diversity and have devoted their lives to making Texas a better
 1-8     place in which to live, work, and raise families while serving as
 1-9     teachers and role models for younger generations; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Countless elderly Texans relish their role as
1-11     grandparents and mentors, instilling many of the same values and
1-12     principles in their grandchildren that were taught to them by their
1-13     parents and grandparents; and
1-14           WHEREAS, Helping to bridge the gap between past, present, and
1-15     future, senior citizens in Texas have made immeasurable
1-16     contributions in such important areas as education, industry,
1-17     agriculture, space exploration, information technology, music,
1-18     arts, and sports; furthermore, they have ably defended our nation's
1-19     freedoms so that democracy could flourish in the United States; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Texas has reaped the benefits
1-21     of senior citizens' experience, vision, and leadership, and it is
1-22     most fitting to honor them for their numerous good works and deeds;
1-23     now, therefore, be it
1-24           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-1     Legislature hereby recognize February 6, 2001, as Senior Day in
 2-2     Texas and encourage Texans to observe and celebrate the
 2-3     contributions of these treasured citizens with appropriate
 2-4     ceremonies and festivities.
