R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Kenneth Leith III of Alpine on
 1-2     October 10, 2000, at the age of 74, brought a great loss to the
 1-3     family and friends of this esteemed individual; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Born in Joplin, Missouri, Mr. Leith was raised in
 1-5     Virginia and Wisconsin; he attended the Virginia Military Institute
 1-6     and St. John's Military Academy, and he answered his country's call
 1-7     to duty by serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II; after his
 1-8     return, he pursued a higher education at Kenyon College and the
 1-9     University of Wisconsin; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Mr. Leith began racing sports cars in Madison,
1-11     Wisconsin, embarking on a distinguished career, during which he
1-12     toured across the United States and participated in events in
1-13     places such as Opaloosas, Watkins Glen, and Riverside; and
1-14           WHEREAS, In 1949, he married the former Mary Pfaff, and the
1-15     following year they moved to Houston to raise a family; Mr. Leith
1-16     retired from racing in 1967, at which time he undertook several
1-17     business ventures; he and his wife moved again to Rockport before
1-18     eventually settling in Alpine; and
1-19           WHEREAS, This notable Texan held a keen interest in Texas
1-20     history and was  active with numerous noteworthy organizations,
1-21     including the Sports Car Club of America, the National Rifle
1-22     Association, and Mensa; in addition, he belonged to the Sul Ross
1-23     4-Wheelers and the American Legion; and
1-24           WHEREAS, A talented racer, loving husband, and devoted
 2-1     father, Mr. Leith lives on in the hearts of the many people whose
 2-2     lives he so deeply touched; now, therefore, be it
 2-3           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-4     Legislature hereby honor the memory of Kenneth Leith III and extend
 2-5     sincere sympathy to the members of his family:  to his son, Kenneth
 2-6     Leith IV; to his three daughters, Dr. Mary Parish, Ann Griess, and
 2-7     Frances Pontasch; to his sister, Mary Gordon Rutrough; to his nine
 2-8     grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and to his other
 2-9     relatives and friends; and, be it further
2-10           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-11     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-12     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-13     Kenneth Leith III.
