No. 229 77R5129 MW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Mary Gay Burton of Houston on January 1-2 31, 2000, brought a great loss to the family and friends of this 1-3 esteemed Texan; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born on September 6, 1940, in San Angelo, Ms. Burton 1-5 graduated from Austin High School and earned a degree from The 1-6 University of Texas at Austin; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Ms. Burton enjoyed a distinguished and lengthy 1-8 career as the personal secretary for former senator and U.S. 1-9 Secretary of the Treasury Lloyd Bentsen; moving to Washington, 1-10 D.C., when he was elected to the U.S. Senate, she served as his 1-11 personal administrative assistant for 23 years before being named 1-12 assistant secretary of the treasury; and 1-13 WHEREAS, While in Washington, D.C., Ms. Burton never forgot 1-14 her beloved Lone Star State, and while there she participated in 1-15 the Texas State Society, serving on its board a number of times; 1-16 and 1-17 WHEREAS, In addition to being a lifelong member of the Texas 1-18 Exes, Ms. Burton belonged to the Austin Colony Chapter of the 1-19 Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Society 1-20 Colonial Dames XVII Century; after returning to Houston in 1994, 1-21 Ms. Burton became an active congregant at St. John the Divine 1-22 Episcopal Church; and 1-23 WHEREAS, A devoted aunt and great-aunt, Ms. Burton has left a 1-24 remarkable legacy, and her bright spirit will undoubtedly continue 2-1 to endure in the hearts and minds of all those who were privileged 2-2 to know her; now, therefore, be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-4 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Mary Gay Burton and 2-5 extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her 2-6 mother, Lou Ellen Burton; to her sister, Linnie Marie Burton 2-7 Donnelly and her husband, George Arthur Donnelly III; and to all 2-8 her other relatives and many friends; and, be it further 2-9 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-10 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of 2-11 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Mary Gay 2-12 Burton.
