R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Johnnie Eng of San Antonio has been selected as a
1-2 2001 honoree for the Texas Excellence Awards Program for
1-3 Outstanding Teachers by The University of Texas at Austin, and this
1-4 significant accomplishment is truly worthy of special recognition;
1-5 and
1-6 WHEREAS, The university's College of Education and the
1-7 Ex-Students Association undertake the challenging task of choosing
1-8 the honorees from a large group of extremely talented elementary
1-9 and high school teachers in Texas; these exceptional educators are
1-10 invited to attend the Conference on Education on the UT campus,
1-11 where they receive a cash award and a specially commissioned bronze
1-12 sculpture; and
1-13 WHEREAS, A graduate of Martin High School in Laredo, Mr. Eng
1-14 earned degrees from Laredo Junior College and the University of
1-15 North Texas before graduating from Trinity University with a master
1-16 of arts degree; committed to continued learning, this admirable
1-17 Texan has studied at Stanford University, the University of
1-18 Virginia, the University of Oregon, The University of Texas at San
1-19 Antonio, the University of the Incarnate Word, and the Universidad
1-20 de Salamanca in Spain; and
1-21 WHEREAS, During a teaching career that has spanned more than
1-22 three decades, Mr. Eng has held positions at Diamond-Hill Jarvis
1-23 High School in Fort Worth and South San Antonio High School and has
1-24 been a Spanish teacher at Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio
2-1 since September 1968; he has inspired both his colleagues and
2-2 students to strive to reach their fullest potential with a creative
2-3 curriculum and a host of unique programs such as Los Primerizos, a
2-4 group that was started to aid students who would be the first in
2-5 their family to attend college; and
2-6 WHEREAS, Widely recognized as an exemplary instructor and
2-7 mentor, Mr. Eng has given generously of his time and talents to
2-8 benefit numerous educational organizations, including the Alamo
2-9 Heights Teachers Association, the American Association of Teachers
2-10 of Spanish and Portuguese, the Texas Foreign Language Association,
2-11 and the Sociedad Honoria Hispanica, for which he currently serves
2-12 as state director; and
2-13 WHEREAS, Working to challenge the minds of our future leaders
2-14 is truly a commendable endeavor, and it is a privilege to join the
2-15 UT staff and alumni in recognizing Mr. Eng for his years of hard
2-16 work and dedication; now, therefore, be it
2-17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-18 Legislature hereby congratulate Johnnie Eng on receiving his recent
2-19 honor from the Texas Excellence Awards Program for Outstanding
2-20 Teachers and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
2-21 success and happiness; and, be it further
2-22 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-23 prepared for Mr. Eng as an expression of high regard by the Texas
2-24 House of Representatives.
