R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Throughout the nation, Americans are seeking 1-2 innovative solutions to prevent heart disease and stroke and to 1-3 help those affected by those illnesses, and the American Heart 1-4 Association, Texas Affiliate, continues to play an integral role in 1-5 this significant undertaking; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Founded in 1924, the American Heart Association has 1-7 devoted more than $1 billion to researching and fighting heart 1-8 disease and stroke, the number one and number three killers of 1-9 Texans today, respectively; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Each year, more than one million Texans support the 1-11 ongoing and invaluable efforts of the American Heart Association to 1-12 combat cardiovascular disease, and the American Heart Association 1-13 annually trains thousands of Texans in lifesaving techniques and 1-14 procedures, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of 1-15 automated external defibrillators; and 1-16 WHEREAS, This commendable organization spreads its message by 1-17 distributing important educational pamphlets and materials and has 1-18 greatly increased the public's knowledge and understanding of risk 1-19 factors related to heart disease and stroke; in addition, the 1-20 American Heart Association is striving to reach its goal of 1-21 reducing coronary heart disease, stroke, and risk by approximately 1-22 25 percent by 2010; and 1-23 WHEREAS, February 2001 is American Heart Month, and this 1-24 year's theme of "Be Prepared for Cardiac Emergencies" encourages 2-1 individuals to learn appropriate first-aid techniques; and 2-2 WHEREAS, With its proactive approach to detecting and 2-3 combating heart disease and stroke and its commitment to serving 2-4 people with those illnesses, the American Heart Association has 2-5 made a positive impact on countless lives, and it is truly a 2-6 privilege to pay tribute to its members for their many good works 2-7 and deeds; now, therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-9 Legislature hereby recognize February 2001 as American Heart Month 2-10 and commend all those associated with the American Heart 2-11 Association for their efforts to curtail the incidence of 2-12 cardiovascular disease in our state; and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-14 prepared for the Texas affiliate of the American Heart Association 2-15 as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of 2-16 Representatives.
