R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Larry Hagman is one of our state's most 1-2 distinguished native sons, and his immeasurable contributions to 1-3 the Lone Star State are deserving of special praise; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born on September 21, 1931, in Weatherford, Texas, 1-5 Mr. Hagman has enjoyed a storied career in the entertainment 1-6 industry; displaying his considerable talents and range as an 1-7 actor, he has appeared in numerous films, television shows, and 1-8 theatrical productions; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Landing a prominent role on the television series 1-10 Dallas in 1977, Mr. Hagman portrayed the character J. R. Ewing with 1-11 a zest that captured the fascination of audiences worldwide; the 1-12 enormously popular saga of a wealthy Texas family aired for 13 1-13 seasons, and its "Who Shot J. R.?" episode remains one of the 1-14 top-rated shows in the history of television; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Mr. Hagman became further identified with our state 1-16 when he served as the host of Lone Star, an eight-part documentary 1-17 on the history of Texas; fittingly, the program was televised in 1-18 the fall of 1985, as Texas prepared to celebrate the 150th 1-19 anniversary of its independence; and 1-20 WHEREAS, This estimable gentleman is heavily involved in a 1-21 variety of civic and philanthropic activities; he has served as 1-22 former chairman for the American Cancer Society's "Great American 1-23 Smokeout" and as a spokesman for the National Kidney Foundation's 1-24 U.S. Transplant Games, an Olympic-style event for recipients of 2-1 life-saving organ transplants of every type; presently a board 2-2 member of the National Kidney Foundation's Transplant America, he 2-3 continues to encourage people to become organ donors and to warn 2-4 about the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Throughout the years, he has drawn strength and 2-6 support from his wife, Maj, and their children; Mr. Hagman is a 2-7 devoted family man and participates in a number of hobbies, such as 2-8 fishing, traveling, and riding motorcycles; and 2-9 WHEREAS, His impressive record of community service speaks 2-10 volumes about the positive impact he has made on the lives of 2-11 countless people, and it is truly a privilege to pay tribute to 2-12 this Texas icon; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-14 Legislature hereby recognize Larry Hagman as a "Texas Treasure" for 2-15 his many good works and deeds and extend to him sincere best wishes 2-16 for good fortune and happiness in his future endeavors; and, be it 2-17 further 2-18 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-19 prepared for Mr. Hagman as an expression of high regard by the 2-20 Texas House of Representatives.
