R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, February 2001 is African American Heritage Month, 1-2 and it is indeed a privilege to recognize this occasion and to 1-3 commend all those at Brykerwoods Elementary School for 1-4 commemorating this noteworthy event; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Begun in 1926, this important monthlong observance, 1-6 which this year has as its theme "Creating and Defining the African 1-7 American Community: Family, Church, Politics, and Culture," serves 1-8 to celebrate the myriad contributions African Americans have made 1-9 and continue to make to our state and nation; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Through their studies, students at Brykerwoods 1-11 Elementary School are learning more about the substantial role 1-12 African Americans have played in our nation's history; by 1-13 participating in daily lessons, attending talks by notable civic 1-14 leaders, and reading weekly newsletter features, these admirable 1-15 young Texans are gaining a keen insight into the rich heritage and 1-16 diverse accomplishments of African Americans; and 1-17 WHEREAS, It is most appropriate to honor Brykerwoods 1-18 Elementary principal Artie Arce and the school's PTA members, 1-19 students, faculty, and parents for taking part in African American 1-20 Heritage Month; now, therefore, be it 1-21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 1-22 Legislature hereby recognize February 2001 as African American 1-23 Heritage Month and extend to Brykerwoods Elementary School sincere 1-24 best wishes for a memorable observance.
