                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, On March 13, 2001, many proud residents of
 1-2     Gainesville will gather in Austin to celebrate Gainesville
 1-3     Appreciation Day at the State Capitol; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Established in 1850 and named for Texas patriot
 1-5     Edmund Pendleton Gaines, the city enjoys a long and distinguished
 1-6     history; after the Civil War, massive cattle drives, oil, and
 1-7     cotton helped to spur growth and bring prosperity to the area, and
 1-8     Gainesville now has a multifaceted economy that revolves around
 1-9     agribusiness, aircraft and steel fabrication plants, manufacturing,
1-10     and tourism; and
1-11           WHEREAS, This charming city serves as the county seat of
1-12     Cooke County and has many noteworthy attractions, including the
1-13     25-acre Frank Buck Zoo, which charges no admission and annually
1-14     draws more than 110,000 people; moreover, the zoo holds the
1-15     distinction of being one of the oldest in our state and is named
1-16     for Gainesville native Frank Buck, Jr., who is considered the
1-17     father of America's modern zoos; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Gainesville also features a large historic district
1-19     that is replete with brick-paved streets and Victorian-style homes
1-20     dating to the 19th century; in addition, the city is home to the
1-21     Kinne's Jewelers Museum, Morton Museum of Cooke County, Texas
1-22     Travel Information Center, and Amtrak's Heartland Flyer, as well as
1-23     respected institutions of higher learning such as Cooke County
1-24     Junior College and North Central Texas College; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Located 67 miles north of Dallas, Gainesville offers
 2-2     its residents a splendid combination of small-town virtues and
 2-3     access to big-city life, and the city's proximity to several bodies
 2-4     of water and recreation facilities makes it a prime destination for
 2-5     outdoor and water enthusiasts; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, With its innate charm, unspoiled beauty, and rich
 2-7     heritage and culture, Gainesville remains one of the Lone Star
 2-8     State's great assets; it truly is an outstanding place in which to
 2-9     live, work, and raise a family, and it is most appropriate to pay
2-10     tribute to the city and its residents at this time; now, therefore,
2-11     be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-13     Legislature hereby recognize March 13, 2001, as Gainesville
2-14     Appreciation Day at the State Capitol and extend its citizens
2-15     sincere best wishes for success and happiness in their future
2-16     endeavors.
